The Silent Run-Through: Sit away from the instrument with the score. Try to "play" the piece in your head from start to finish, hearing every note, tempo change, and dynamic marking.
Tactile Visualization: Close your eyes and feel the sensation of the keys under your fingers. Imagine the precise weight and movement needed for a delicate pianissimo or a deep chord.
Spot-Check Memory: Pick a random measure in the middle of a piece and try to write down or visualize the exact notes for both hands without using the instrument.
Learning to trust mental practice takes time. It feels strange at first to trade five extra hours at the bench for an hour by the water with a score in hand.
