When parents look for piano lessons, they often have a few goals in mind: helping their child learn to read music, play their favorite songs, or prepare for exams and performances. These are all important parts of learning piano, but music education can offer so much more.
At Asana Piano Studio (located in Arcadia, CA), I believe piano lessons are about more than learning to play the right notes. Through regular practice, students learn patience, discipline, problem-solving, and how to work toward a goal. These are skills they can carry with them long after they leave the piano.
My Journey: From Piano Performance to Google
Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old. I earned my Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan and my Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Northwestern University. Along the way, I developed a deep appreciation for classical music, thoughtful practice (which, of course, had its ups and downs!), and the process of helping students grow as musicians.
I also became interested in business and marketing, which eventually led me to work at Google. While music and technology may seem like very different fields, I found that many of the skills I developed through years of piano study were just as valuable in the corporate world.
For example, learning a challenging piece of music requires patience, attention to detail, and the ability to break a big task into smaller, manageable steps. You learn to recognize patterns, solve problems, and keep going when something doesn't come easily.
These same skills are useful in almost any career. Whether someone goes into business, science, technology, or the arts, knowing how to approach a challenge and work through it is valuable.
After seven years of working in the corporate world while continuing to teach and perform, I decided to pursue piano full-time. My experiences have shaped the way I approach music education and the skills I hope to help my students develop.
Why Learning Piano Still Matters in the Age of AI
With AI and technology becoming a bigger part of our everyday lives, it's easy to find information and answers almost instantly. But learning how to think independently, express yourself creatively, and work through a difficult problem still takes time and practice.
Learning piano gives students opportunities to develop these skills firsthand.
Patience and discipline: Progress doesn't happen overnight. Students learn that consistent practice leads to improvement, even when progress feels slow.
Problem-solving: When a passage is difficult, students learn to figure out what's going wrong, try different approaches, and find a solution.
Focus and attention to detail: Reading music, coordinating both hands, and keeping a steady rhythm require students to pay attention to several things at once.
Creativity and self-expression: Music gives students a way to communicate emotions and ideas, develop their own interpretations, and express themselves without words.
Confidence and resilience: Preparing for a performance or mastering a challenging piece teaches students to manage nerves, learn from mistakes, and keep trying.
These skills aren't developed overnight, and piano lessons aren't a shortcut to success in other fields. Rather, music provides a meaningful way for students to practice these abilities over time.
Piano Lessons Tailored to Each Student
Every student comes to piano with different interests, goals, and experiences. At my studio, I tailor lessons to each student's needs while building a strong musical foundation.
For students pursuing advanced study: Students interested in competitions, auditions, and exams receive structured classical training, with an emphasis on technique, musical expression, interpretation, and effective practice habits.
For children building a foundation: Lessons focus on note reading, rhythm, listening, coordination, and developing good practice habits. As students progress, they learn to approach new music independently and become more confident in their abilities.
For adult learners: Whether you're returning to piano after many years or learning for the first time, lessons can be a rewarding way to explore music, challenge yourself, and make time for something creative.
My goal is to help each student grow at their own pace, develop a genuine appreciation for music, and enjoy the process of learning.
